Crown Paints crowned for continuous improvement at heavily-invested Hull site

Hull’s Crown Paints team has won an industry award recognising continuous improvement at the Medina Park site.

Health and welfare of employees, safe processes and the creation of a sustainable environment were all factors behind the Coatings Care Progress Award at the annual British Coatings Federation conference.

Members of the Crown Paints leadership team were on hand to take to the stage to collect the award at the black-tie event, held at Manchester’s Mercure Hotel, with the firm’s Darwen site also a finalist.

Judges choose a winner by benchmarking all applicants against 45 KPIs, with the award going to the company that has made the most significant year-on-year improvement in performance.

Pete Waites, technical director at Crown Paints, said: “We are absolutely thrilled for Crown Paints Hull to receive such prestigious industry recognition. A special mention is also needed for our Darwen site for also being named as a finalist. It is, in fact, the eighth year in a row that Crown Paints has been shortlisted for this award.

“It’s such a great achievement and reflects all of the hard work that has gone into continuing to make significant progress and improvements across our sites. To have also achieved this during a year that has seen extremely high demand in the industry, as well as covid restrictions, is even more impressive.”

The British Coatings Federation is the sole UK Trade Association representing the interests of the decorative, industrial and powder coatings, printing inks and wallcovering manufacturers.

Recognition comes after major investment in Hull too, with a £4.4 million state-of-the-art raw material and packaging warehouse facility added.

Part of Denmark’s Hempel Group, the past year has seen lockdown licks of paint boost revenues, rising to £212.8 million, up from £184.5 million in 2019.
