Cristian Romero breaks silence on Tottenham transfer as move edges closer

Cristian Romero has revealed that a move to Tottenham Hotspur has been his priority as a switch to north London edges closer.

As first revealed by football.london, Fabio Paratici has been in advanced talks with Atalanta over a move for the Argentine defender for some time.

Negotiations have been somewhat slow, however, there appears to have been a breakthrough in those talks with a fee having been agreed between the two teams, and it now seems only a matter of time before Romero becomes a Spurs player.

As a matter of fact, the defender himself has been talking about his imminent move and has suggested that he only had his eyes set on joining Nuno Espirito Santo's men.

Speaking to Sky In Italy ahead of a flight to London, he said: "Tottenham and [Fabio] Paratici strongly wanted me. I thank them, from day one they were interested in me, I liked the project they have for me and so that’s why I chose Tottenham. Now I have to respond on the field."

There still appears to be some way to go before the move can officially be signed-off. Firstly, Atalanta are expected to exercise their option to buy the centre-back from Italian rivals Juventus, having initially agreed a two-year loan deal for his services.

Meanwhile, the Bergamo outfit are also in the midst of finding Romero’s immediate replacement and appear to have asked for help from Juventus once more by eyeing Turkish international Merih Demiral.

Should Romero's move go through as expected, he would become the club's third recruit of the summer window. Bryan Gil has already been recruited from Sevilla, whilst Romero’s former Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini was also confirmed as a new Tottenham player a few weeks ago.

Paratici has also been busy on the departure front, too. So far, Toby Alderweireld, Juan Foyth, Erik Lamela and Joe Hart have all left the club on permanent deals.
