Criminal jailed after brutal East Kilbride attack while on early prison release

A violent criminal has been jailed for three years after a vicious assault whilst on early release from prison.

Stuart Thomson throttled a man to such an extent his terrified victim passed out.

Thomson was jailed for two years at the High Court in Glasgow in 2017 for attacking his girlfriend.

A jury at Hamilton Sheriff Court convicted him of the latest assault, committed on September 2 last year when he was on licence.

He was found guilty of throttling, punching and kicking his victim at a house in Carlyle Terrace, Calderwood.

Thomson, a prisoner, pleaded self-defence, claiming he acted when the man armed himself with a knife and threatened to go out and stab someone.

Thomson’s victim told the court he had been scared the 31-year-old was going to murder him.

Another eyewitness told how Thomson was the aggressor and carried out a sustained attack which spilled on to the path outside the house.

Sheriff Marie Smart jailed Thomson for two years for the assault and six months for attempting to pervert the course of justice by failing to attend an ID parade.

She added another six months as he’d failed to turn up at court for the case earlier this year.

All terms are to run consecutively, making his sentence three years. And these won’t take effect until Thomson has served a portion of his High Court sentence, re-imposed due to him offending whilst on early release.

After the verdicts, court heard how Thomson has “numerous” convictions for crimes of violence.
