Queensland Police are investigating the suspicious death of a man on Palm Island, off the coast of Townsville.

Police said the 64-year-old man was pronounced dead about 9:30am today after suffering serious head injuries at his home on Creek Road, one of the island's main roads.

"After a preliminary investigation, it was determined it wasn't a death from natural causes," Detective Acting Inspector Dean Cavanagh said.

"We are treating the death as suspicious."

Forensic and scientific examiners from Townsville District Police have flown to the island.

"The next step in the investigation is that scene will be thoroughly investigated and processed," he said.

"We'll be looking for any evidence whatsoever that will determine what led to the death and what occurred during the death.

"We'll look at all of the circumstances around the location, the man's life and his personal circumstances."

He said police were appealing for more information.

"Obviously police and the investigators there will be talking to anyone whatsoever who may have any information to provide, and obviously ask anyone to come forward who might have any information despite how minor they deem that information to be," he said.

"Small parts of information in an investigation like this can be absolutely critical."

Police have extended their condolences to the man's next of kin.
