VIZIANAGARAM: Cases of crime against women and children in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh were down by over 30 per cent in the year 2022 when compared to 2021 as per the latest data by the district police.
A total of 50 rape cases were reported in the district in 2022 in comparation to 76 in 2021 and 54 cases in 2020. There was around 34 per cent dip in rape cases in 2022 in the district. There was a 38 per cent reduction in the POCSO cases in 2022 in the district. A total of 44 POCSO cases were registered in the district in 2022 in comparison to 71 in 2021 and 50 in 2020. There was 19 per cent reduction in cases of outrage of modesty in 2022 as 176 cases were reported in 2022 in comparison to 218 in 2021 and 178 in 2020.
Vizianagaram police chief Deepika M Patil said that due to the awareness campaigns by way of Disha Jagruti Yatra and Disha App Special drives in the district, the occurrence of offences against women and children were drastically reduced when compared to the previous years, she added.
The Vizianagaram district has reported a slight decline in the number of murder cases registered in 2022. A total of 23 murders were reported in 2022 in comparison to 24 in 2021. There was a reduction in robbery cases in the district as only four cases were reported in 2022 and 10 cases in 2021. The district has reported 139 cybercrimes in 2022, over 32 per cent increase in 2022 when compared to (105 cases) 2021, Deepika M Patil added.
The district has found itself among few districts when it comes to the conviction rate in the state. The conviction rate in the district stood at 60 per cent in 2022. A total of 6,171 were disposed in 2022 and a total of 3,698 cases were ended with conviction, she added.
