Cricket's India-Pakistan match in New York sells out, historic event

Asia Cup 2023 Pakistan Vs Srilanka

In just a few months, all eyes will be on the United States as the cricket world gears up for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup. This marquee event, set to take place in the U.S. and the Caribbean, holds immense significance for the development of cricket in the country. As power brokers in the popular British Commonwealth game attempt to infiltrate the world's largest sports market, one match stands out above all others – India versus Pakistan in New York.

The rivalry between India and Pakistan is widely known as one of the most heated in sports. However, what adds an extra level of intensity to their encounters is the intense political situation between these neighboring nations. Having fought three wars since their independence in 1947, the geopolitical friction sadly means that bilateral cricket series between them have been non-existent for over a decade, and it seems unlikely to resume anytime soon.

Yet, this scarcity only fuels the anticipation every time these two teams meet. A new chapter of this fierce rivalry will be written on June 9, when India and Pakistan clash in New York. This historic event is expected to draw massive crowds, and tickets will certainly not come cheap. The public ballot, which opened in February and closed on February 7, offered standard tickets priced at $175, standard plus at $300, and premium tickets at $400.

The International Cricket Council stated that the ticket allocation was not based on a first-come, first-served system. Any unsold tickets from the ballot will go on general sale from February 22, but these will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. However, it is highly likely that this India-Pakistan showdown will be a sell-out, cementing its status as the hottest ticket of the tournament.

The match will take place at the 34,000-seat modular stadium in Eisenhower Park, located 30 miles east of Manhattan. Last month, a first glimpse of Nassau County Stadium, where eight matches will be played in this prestigious tournament, was revealed. Before the India-Pakistan clash on June 9, there will be only one warm-up game in late May, with the first official match at the venue scheduled between South Africa and Sri Lanka on June 3.

New York will conclude its slate of games when the United States team, competing in their first-ever World Cup in any format, faces a tough challenge against India on June 12. The later stages of the tournament will be exclusively played in the Caribbean. However, cricket's presence in the U.S. doesn't end here, as matches in Texas and Florida will also be held as part of the T20 World Cup.

This event marks a culmination of recent efforts to establish cricket in the United States. With the backing of wealthy South Asian businessmen in Silicon Valley, the Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament was successfully launched in July last year. The professional T20 tournament attracted some of the best players in the world, and the inaugural edition of MLC recorded a profit of $8 million.

In a significant milestone for the sport, cricket was included in the Los Angeles 2028 Games, ending its absence of over 100 years from the Olympic Games. And now, as we eagerly await the T20 World Cup, it is exciting to see cricket's biggest event of the year taking place in New York. Tickets for this sought-after event will undoubtedly be snapped up with great enthusiasm, further solidifying the growing presence of cricket in the United States.
