People rushed to safety when a fire broke out at a rooftop garden in Melbourne's CBD.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews responded quickly to multiple triple zero calls and reports of smoke billowing from the top of the nine-storey building on Queen Street at about 5pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters in breathing apparataus put the fire out and there have been no reports of injuries.

The fire caused significant damage to a rooftop garden and furniture, the FRV said in a statement.

FRV issued a community advice message as there was a lot of smoke in the area.

An investigation will determine how the fire started.
