Crews battle 'first moorland fire of the season' on Saddleworth Moor

The 'first moorland fire of the season' has broken out on the hills above Saddleworth.

Firefighters spent two and a half hours on Tuesday afternoon tackling the blaze near the village of Diggle on moorland which is 'well used by rare ground-nesting birds'.

For the first time, crews from Slaithwaite and Holmfirth fire stations in West Yorkshire used specialist equipment designed for tackling moor fires.

A spokesperson from Slaithwaite Fire Station said: "The crew at Slaithwaite were called to the first moorland fire of the season in Marsden, up near Black Moss reservoir this afternoon at 3.45pm.

"Additional appliances came from Holmfirth to support.

"The crews were on site for approximately two and a half hours fighting the fire, the fire was contained to an area of 200 metres square.

"This was the first time out for the new Polais 4x4 and fogging unit now based at Slaithwaite specifically to tackling wildfire fires.

"The crew also were able to use new blowers to help suppress the fire quickly and prevent it spreading in very windy conditions."

The National Trust, which owns the land, initially urged visitors to avoid the area.

A spokesperson later added: "Many thanks to the fire crews for getting this fire under control very quickly, especially as this area is well used by rare ground-nesting birds.

"That is one of the reasons we don't carry out controlled burns on Marsden Moor."
