Crash update after three police officers and driver hurt on main road

Police have given an update after three officers and a driver were injured in a dramatic crash on a main road.

Shortly before 4pm on Thursday, emergency services were called to Duke Street, in Birkenhead, to reports of a collision between a Merseyside Police car and a black estate car.

The vehicles crashed into each other in the middle of the road, while travelling towards Cleveland Street.

Several road closures were put in place after the crash, which caused significant damage to a police car after it was shoved into a set of railings.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the road, the black car involved had to be cut apart by fire crews to get the driver out.

The three police officers, who were treated at the scene, also sustained slight, non-life-threatening injuries.

Merseyside Police said no arrests have been made in relation to the crash, which is being investigated as an RTC.

In a statement on Thursday, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO: "Emergency services are currently in Birkenhead following reports of a road traffic collision between a police car and a car.

"The collision is reported to have happened at 3:50pm this afternoon (7 May) on Duke St, Birkenhead (travelling towards Cleveland St).
