Craig Mackail-Smith, Pierce Bird and Sam Stubbs shine - Notts County player ratings from Grimsby Town win

Notts County will take their fight for League Two survival to the final day of the season after their 2-1 defeat of Grimsby Town on Saturday.

Goals from Craig Mackail-Smith and a Harry Clifton own goal ensured Neal Ardley's side took three points from their penultimate match and their final game at Meadow Lane this season.

Here's how our Magpies writer Leigh Curtis rated the players on another crucial day at Notts...

Notts County take survival bid to the final day after tense win over Grimsby Town

Ryan Schofield: Goalkeeper made a good save down to his left to deny Luke Hendrie early on, but followed that up with an even better stop from Max Wright. 7

Mitch Rose: Took a nasty blow to the head early on but recovered to produce his usual demonstration of power and persistence. Wanted to be involved in everything Notts did. 7

Pierce Bird: Was rarely troubled by the Grimsby attack and had a solid game in the heart of the back five. Scored a crucial second goal with a  brilliant header. 8

Sam Stubbs: . Dominated his personal battle with Ahkeem Rose, carried the ball out from the back and threw himself into the challenges. 8

Matt Tootle: Whipped a free-kick just over the bar in the first half and you could clearly see he was giving it everything in his bid to help Notts to a vital victory. 7

Jim O’Brien: Ratted around midfield with his usual tenacity as you would expect and expended plenty of energy. Tried his hardest to unpick the lock and did a lot of unselfish work . 7

Michael Doyle: Flung himself into tackles and caught the eye with a couple of lovely passes to Rob Milsom. Produced a peach of a delivery for Pierce Bird’s header. 7

Rob Milsom: Charged forward to support the attack in a key moment in the first half and had another excellent game at left-back which he has made his own. 7

Shaun Brisley: Like Stubbs he carried the ball out of defence on plenty of occasions and produced some valuable contributions in his first game since New Year’s Day. 7

Kane Hemmings:  On the periphery as a centre forward and did a lot of chasing after the Grimsby defence, but no chances came the way of the top scorer. 6

Craig Mackail-Smith:  As you would expect from the striker, he made plenty of unselfish runs into the channels and ran the hard yards. Scored a crucial goal. 8

Jon Stead (Mackail-Smith 76):  Came on with plenty of intent to try to hurt the Grimsby defence and showed a couple of neat touches in the time he was on the pitch. 6

Virgil Gomis (Hemmings 76):  His speed caused real concern to the Grimsby back four but he should have passed to Stead rather than shoot during a counter attack. 6

Not used: Vaughan, Alessandra, Evina, Fitzsimons, Boldewijn
