CPS financial problems many, mayoral candidate solutions few

Feb. 07--Chicago Public Schools faces gaping budget deficits, skyrocketing retirement costs and tough negotiations for a new teachers contract, but the candidates for mayor have offered few solutions on how they'd deal with some of the gravest financial challenges the city faces.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and 2nd Ward Ald. Bob Fioretti each say they're looking for the governor and state lawmakers to fix the district's money mess by giving CPS more funding and approving pension system changes. Businessman Willie Wilson says money from a Chicago casino is part of the answer. None of the candidates voluntarily brings up the expiring teachers contract.
