Covid testing in schools and amount of positive cases found across Scotland

More than 50,000 school staff members and 12,000 pupils were tested for coronavirus in one week earlier this month.

And Education Secretary John Swinney confirmed on Wednesday that school testing, on those without symptoms, has so far confirmed just one in 1,000 as having the virus. Since asymptomatic testing began in schools five weeks ago just 0.1 per cent of cases have been positive after a PCR confirmation test. Lateral flow tests are used first and then positive results are followed up with a PCR test.

Swinney says there's been a "quite extraordinary" take-up of testing since classes went back, and this would be extended to cover all secondary school pupils after Easter. It's currently in place for S4 to S6 pupils.

In the week ending March 7, more than 56,000 school staff and 12,000 pupils were tested for coronavirus.

The Health Secretary added: "This programme is helping to break chains of transmission as early as possible, and I would encourage all those who are eligible to make use of the offer to do so when they return to school."

The testing programme in schools is expected to continue into the start of the new academic year in August.

Speaking about school testing, he added: "This has been a really welcome development, and a welcome level of participation by senior pupils and staff. The levels of participation have been really quite extraordinary to be honest.

"And I am optimistic that will be carried on with S1 to S3 pupils when it is rolled out after the Easter holidays."

692 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed across Scotland on Wednesday, with test positivity at 3.1 per cent.

321 people were receiving care in hospital after testing positive for the virus, with 31 in intensive care.

Sadly, three additional deaths were reported.
