Covid Scotland: Green list extended with extra countries including Croatia, Bulgaria and Hong Kong

Hopeful holidaymakers are in luck as the UK government has announced more countries will be added to the green list from July 19 at 4am.

The traffic light system determines the rules for Brits returning and those travelling to green listed places can do so for leisure purposes and do not have to isolate once back.

International travel rules are reviewed every three weeks by the UK Transport secretary Grant Schapps and today he has stated that 12 extra will be added to the list due to their low Covid rates.

Updates were made on July 14 to the official Government website after Grant Schapp's announcement on Wednesday.

Bulgaria, Croatia, Hong Kong and Taiwan have all gained a spot on the anticipated list and this will come into action on Monday July 19 at 4am.

This comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that from July 19, those who are double jagged will not have to isolate when returning from an amber listed country but will still have to prove a negative PCR test on the second day.

Airlines were eager for Scotland to take on this rule after England laid out their rules for "Freedom day" last week.

Commenting on the news that isolation rules were scrapped, Jet2 said: “This is the news that UK holidaymakers have been looking forward to, as it finally signals a meaningful restart to international travel. Instead of a handful of destinations to choose from, this news means our customers can plan and look forward to flights and holidays across 40 Green and Amber list destinations this summer."

However, when discussing international travel, Sturgeon has continued to encourage Scots to stay in Scotland and really ask themselves if this is journey really necessary.

The traffic light system only sets out the rules regarding reasons for travelling (essential or non-essential) and rules when returning.

Each destination enforces their own rules and regulations for visitors, so even though countries are added to our Green list, does not necessarily mean the UK is on theirs.

Holiday makers are encouraged to check frequently on the FCDO website if planning a trip to ensure they know the rules for that country and book accordingly.
