Covid Scotland: Every new restriction coming into force from Boxing Day

Nicola Sturgeon announced earlier this week that Scotland's current coronavirus guidance is set to change on Boxing Day, with further restrictions also coming into play on December 27.

Today John Swinney also announced that nightclubs in Scotland will be expected to close for three weeks as part of the latest omicron restrictions.

Pubs and restaurants must also reintroduce social distancing and only serve customers at tables from December 27 under plans announced by the First Minister on Tuesday.

Other rules included new curbs on large events and football matches and limitations on the number of households that can socialise at once.

Here are all the rules that will change from the end of this week:

Hogmanay, outdoor events and football

All of Scotland's major Hogmanay events have been scrapped and football matches will be 'spectator-free' for three weeks as part of the new rules.

The public will be able to meet on December 31 to toast the New Year as things stand - although Nicola Sturgeon has asked people to keep any gatherings as small as possible.

Outdoor events will be limited to just 500 people to help slow the spread of Omicron - meaning that major sporting events at stadiums will no longer have spectators present.

Concerts, theatre shows and gigs will be limited to 200 people if they are seated, or 100 for standing with many of Scotland's venues cancelling events in the coming weeks due to the limitation of audience numbers.

The new restrictions come into force on Boxing Day.

Pubs and restaurants

Meanwhile, further protections will be implemented in hospitality venues from December 27 in a bid to reduce the risk of transmission in what was described as “higher risk environments”.

As part of these measures, Scots will be required to order drinks from their table at venues that serve alcohol for consumption on the premises.

One metre rules on social distancing will also be reintroduced between groups of people - but this will not apply within a group.

Household mixing

The guidance from December 27 is to limit contacts, stay at home and socially distance at least until January 2 when the rules will be reviewed again.

The Scottish Government's guidance is to restrict socialising to three households after Christmas.
