Covid Scotland: 1,480 new cases overnight as hospital numbers soar

Scotland has reported a further 1,480 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon gave an update on the latest figures at Friday's daily briefing, where she was joined by the Chief Nursing Officer Fiona McQueen.

According to the First Minister, the new cases represent 6.9 per cent of those tested for the virus on Thursday (January 21).

Out of those cases, 166 are in the NHS Lothian health. board, with a further 427 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Another 273 cases were confirmed to be in Lanarkshire.

As of 8.30am this morning, a total of 358,454 people had also received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, which is hoped to start reducing case numbers throughout Scotland.

However, hospital figures have again seen a significant rise across the country, with 2,053 people now being treated for the virus.

This is a rise of 49 since yesterday.

There are also 161 people in intensive care units, which is the same figure as Thursday.

Sadly, the First Minister also confirmed that 71 new deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 5,628.
