COVID outbreak at Perth Prison sees over 200 self-isolate

Over 200 individuals had to self-isolate at Perth Prison following a COVID outbreak this week.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed on Wednesday that 12 inmates had tested positive.

The number forced to self-isolate as a result was as many as 224.

Four clients of the prison were deemed unable to appear at Perth Sheriff Court on Wednesday as a result of the infection rate at the facility.

It is the latest outbreak at Perth Prison, which struggled to cope with the disease when it was at its peak in 2020.

Some prisoners were released early to safeguard others in the crowded jail.

An SPS spokesperson said: “There are currently 12 positive cases and 224 isolating.

“The safety and wellbeing of those living and working in our prisons is a priority for the Scottish Prison Service.

“We have robust pandemic plans in place as we manage and support those in our care during these challenging times.

“Plans include issuing PPE and guidance for use, as well as self isolation as a precaution and testing is also available."
