Covid: No deaths in Mumbai for 2nd day in a row, but up in state

MUMBAI: For the second consecutive day, Mumbai recorded zero Covid deaths on Wednesday. It is only the third time this year that the city has had no Covid deaths.

On Wednesdays, the city usually records a mid-week hike in cases but this time, the tally (255) remained under 300 like on the previous three days. Only 23 patients were hospitalised on Wednesday, according to the BMC daily Covid update. The daily test positivity rate has been under 1% for the fourth consecutive day.

Cases in the state remained under 3,000 for the second day in row, but fatalities surged. The state added 2,748 cases and 41 deaths on Wednesday.

“The third wave appears to be over in Mumbai. The cases are dwindling and things appear bright at the moment,” said Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of the state task force. The week-on-week comparison of cases in Mumbai showed cases dropped by 51% from 4,783 between February 2 and 8 to 2,301 between February 9 and 14.

Active cases in the state continued to decline. There were less than 30,000 in the state, including 2,100 in Mumbai.

“The state is adding 2,500 cases on average; we expect them to drop to 1,000-1,500 in the next few days,” said an official. The state government is likely to announce further relaxations in Covid curbs this week. “The restaurant and theatre occupancy, currently capped at 50%, is likely to be increased,” said an official.
