Covid NI: Nearly 2,000 further positive coronavirus cases recorded

A further 1,973 positive Covid cases have been recorded in Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 143,433 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Two further coronavirus-related deaths have also been reported, with the death toll from the DoH now standing at 2,166.

The fatalities are reported to have occurred within the current reporting period.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 9,088 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Wednesday, there are currently 134 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and eight in intensive care.

Meanwhile, healthcare staff in Northern Ireland will from Thursday start receiving their £500 special recognition payments for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The one-off bonuses for Health and Social Care (HSC) workers were first announced in late January.

Some of the payments will be issued from Thursday with the rest to follow next week, Stormont's Department of Health said.

A spokeswoman said: "From July 22 the first payments to some HSC staff who are paid on a fortnightly basis, will be included in their salaries.

"This will then be followed by the remainder of HSC employees receiving their payments next week."

The recognition payment is being issued to health workers including doctors, community dentists and staff in community pharmacies.
