Covid jump doesn't worry neighbours in one of Nottinghamshire's worst areas for cases

People in Gedling South are taking it in their stride after data shows it’s currently one of the worst areas in Nottinghamshire for covid cases. In the seven days to July 1, according to the most recent available data from the Government, cases in Gedling South have increased by 266.7% .

The total number increased by 32 to 44. This is currently one of the highest case rates in Nottinghamshire, along with Gedling South, Keyworth South has high case rates which have increased by 68.8%.

Residents and business owners told Nottinghamshire Live that it’s a part of life and people are getting on with it. Janet Whiten, owner of Whitens News questioned why Gedling South has one of the highest rates.

The 75-year-old said: “It makes you wonder why doesn’t it? It's not overly populated, I can’t understand it, we must be extra friendly here.

“Even the doctors now, when you go, you don’t have to wear a mask now. People still come in here with a mask, I assume they must be extra vulnerable.”

Resident Daniel Howard, 41, who moved to the area in February, says he is not scared of the virus. Mr Howard said: “My mum and dad just got it last week - I didn’t get it. They had not had it since covid came out. I don’t live in fear of it - it’s become part of life. You only pay attention when it comes home.”

Matt Elliott , 42, owner of family business, Phil's Plaice, told Nottinghamshire Live that they do get some customers wearing masks. Mr Elliott said: “I don’t worry about it anymore, it is what it is.

“Everyone seems to get on with it now. We do get one or two with masks on. I don’t think you hear of anybody now, a year or go you’d hear about it, from customers and others, now you don’t.”
