Covid Ireland: NPHET letter discusses multiple rule changes including face masks for children

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said in his letter to the Government that NPHET recommends the wider use of vaccine certs.

Currently, vaccine certs are predominantly used for accessing hospitality.

NPHET did not specify any particular sector or areas where the Government should extend the vaccine pass system.

But Dr Holohan has already said NPHET would be “in favour” of the vaccine certs being used in gyms and hairdressers.

A senior Government source has told the Irish Mirror that the Government “are not sure it would make a huge difference."

The Irish Mirror also understands that NPHET said in its letter that they may give further consideration on giving advice on the wearing of face masks for children aged under 13.

NPHET previously has asked HIQA, the health and patient safety watchdog, to examine whether children under 13 should wear a mask indoors.

HIQA did not recommended that children attending primary school wear face coverings.

A senior source moved to downplay the reference in NPHET's latest letter on face masks for children aged under 13.

The source said “don’t expect a U-turn” on the wearing of face masks and that discussion on the matter “would not be imminent.”

Dr Holohan also advised that people who engage in high-risk activities, like attending nightclubs, should be encouraged to take antigen tests.

In his letter to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, Dr Holohan also reiterated that the reintroduction of restrictions can not be ruled out in the future but such a move was not being considered at that time.

The top doctors have also strongly advised the Government that people should work from home where possible and said employers should be supportive of such a move.

Cabinet Ministers are to discuss NPHET’s recommendations at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Sinn Fein TD Louise O’Reilly, who is her party’s spokeswoman for workers’ rights has called on the Government to heed the guidance of the NPHET and reinstate advice allowing workers the option to work remotely.
