Covid: Deaths spike in Indore but fatality rate low

INDORE: More than half of the Covid fatalities in the third wave in Indore district have been reported in the last three days as deaths continue to spike.

According to the bulletin, the district had recorded 16 Covid deaths between December 20, 2021, and January 20 this month, but nine more were reported between January 21 and January 23, taking the toll to 1,409 on Sunday night. Among those who have died in the third wave are a 17-year-old boy and a 95-year-old man.

There is an apparent spike in deaths but, thankfully, the fatality rate is still low in the third wave - steady at 0.04% from December 19 to December 23.

Indore chief medical and health officer Dr BS Saitya told TOI, "There are two-three factors in Covid fatalities witnessed this time. The first is that most of the deaths are among people who have comorbidities. A 17-year-old boy, who was among the four deaths reported on Sunday, was suffering from renal failure and was on dialysis. He got infected with Covid and died."

Another 17-year-old, a girl, had died with Covid-19 after she took poison, he said. "In most cases, Covid infection was identified during a routine check, when they were being hospitalised for treatment of other diseases," Dr Saitya added.

In the first two waves, most of the patients who died had been admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with Covid. This time, the trend has slightly changed, said Dr Saitya.

"The others who died had comorbidities like hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and other issues, along with age factor," the CMHO added. HoD of chest and TB department Dr Salil Bhargava told TOI, "Barring one or two cases, Covid deaths have been reported among comorbid people. It means those with compromised immunity died after testing Covid-positive."
