Covid cases in Lanarkshire drop by more than 10 per cent in one week

New coronavirus cases in Lanarkshire fell by almost 11 per cent last week.

At the Scottish Government’s daily press briefing in Edinburgh today (Monday, March 8), Deputy First Minister John Swinney confirmed there had been a further 99 positive tests across the region yesterday.

As a result, there were 648 new coronavirus cases in the county last week - 10.7 per cent less than the previous week and the eighth week in the past nine that case numbers have decreased.

Although case numbers are usually lower over the weekend, yesterday was the eighth day in the last 11 that less than 100 new cases were announced in a single day.

Last week was also the first week since week beginning September 21 that less than 700 cases were recorded in a week.

Overall, Covid-19 cases in Lanarkshire are now down by 72 per cent since the peak in the week beginning January 4, when 2353 were confirmed.

In total, 37,555 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Lanarkshire and 1,231 people have died after testing positive.

Lanarkshire has been the worst affected region in Scotland by coronavirus with 5673.8 cases and 192.6 deaths for every 100,000 residents.

Across the region, 227,332 people - 41.8 per cent of the population - have received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccination and 12,630 of them - 2.3 per cent of the population - have received both doses.
