Covid-19 Ireland: What time will Government announce new restrictions?

The cabinet is set to meet today to discuss Nphet's latest advice on the potential introduction of new restrictions over the Christmas period.

The Taoiseach is travelling back from Brussels today to chair the meeting with new restrictions on hospitality expected to be announced.

When will the Government announce the restrictions?

Eamon Ryan has confirmed that the sub-committee will meet "around midday today" and that he "would expect it [a Taoiseach's address] is likely this evening. We need to give people certainty and we will. People are conscious and we are very aware that the new variant is a risk."

Why is Nphet so worried about Omicron?

In short, the transmissibility of this variant when compared to Delta. Last week Omicron made up 1% of cases. It now makes up approximately 27% of cases.

What advice has been issued to Government?

Nphet has advised that all hospitality including pubs and restaurants be shut at 5pm every night.

Indoor events could be capped at 50% while outdoor events could see crowds capped at 5000 but there is set to be no changes to household gatherings.

Close contacts of confirmed Covid-19 cases will be told to restrict movements if they haven't received a booster.

Schools are set to stay open until December 23 with no plans to shut them early to reduce close contact between students.

Will the advice be followed exactly?

Potentially not. Eamon Ryan has said that the recommended advice may be adjusted but that "a surge is coming".
