Covid-19 Ireland: Five clear hotspots as new cases trend emerges over last seven days

Ireland is currently in the grips of a third wave of coronavirus infections as the country battles to control the spread of the disease.

There are some signs of progress as daily cases continue to fall, although the number of patients in hospitals and ICU remains high.

One of the key measures used by health officials to determine the scale of an outbreak in an area is the 14-day incidence rate of infections per 100,000 population.

And by this metric Monaghan remains the hardest-hit region in Ireland, with a rate of 623.9.

Other hotspots with a rate higher than 400 include Waterford, Carlow, Wexford and Dublin.

However, there is some good news, as the rate of infection in every single county is now lower than it was seven days earlier, in some cases significantly so.

Louth, for instance, has seen the incidence drop from 637.9 on Wednesday, February 3, to 396.4 seven days ago.
