Couple who both lost Thomas Cook jobs share despair at having no money for bills

A married couple who both lost their jobs when Thomas Cook went bust are at a complete loss over how they are going to pay their bills.

Martin Browne and his partner, who have 40 years of service with the travel firm between them, are among the thousands last week who were made jobless.

The distraught pair say they now have no way to pay their bills or mortgage.

"It's devastating," cabin manager Martin told the Manchester Evening News.

"Between me and my wife we have got 40 years service with Thomas Cook and we were both sacked on the same day.

"No wages, no notice. No way to pay the mortgage on Monday. We were just sent home.

"I'd been keeping myself up to speed because I'm a union rep, so I was getting the information coming through, but I was resigned to the fact that we'd gone bust as early as Friday".

Martin has also expressed anger about the way the collapse was handled and is critical that while some of Thomas Cook's subsidiaries abroad have received government bailouts, the UK has not.

"It's disgusting, we've been dropped," he added.

We've got no way of paying the bills on Monday, we don't even know if we'll be able to get credit again because I was ill with stage three melanoma in 2017.

"I had nine months off, I spent my savings, run up credit card debt and now I've just been left without a wage.

"With the political will, we weren't asking for a bailout, we just wanted assurances. Someone has made a political decision - vandalism is the only way I can describe it.

"How can that be allowed to happen where you've got a single airline, that is classed as four airlines in one, three of them survive with bailouts from their government and we get left to fold?"

Martin has now signed up for Jobseeker's Allowance and Universal Credit .

He continued: "I had quite a good job I had a reasonable life with my kids and now the prospect is that I'm going to get £73.10 a week.

"No redundancy money. Officially and properly, I'd have been left with £30,000 severance.

"Now there's no severance. Do not pass go, do not collect £200  - you're gone and that's the same for every single person - it's outrageous.

"I think I'm keeping busy because if I stop and think, I don't know what I'll do."

He added: "I've never been unemployed in my life, I started working at a butchers at 12 years old and I've been in continuous employment, I've never signed on benefits and now I've just been left with nothing".

Unite, meanwhile, has arranged a march at the Conservative Party Conference, which will take place from 10am on Monday.

It has also called for an enquiry into how and why the firm collapsed.
