Couple horrified after arsonists set fire to car while they were asleep at home

A couple remain horrified after arsonists set fire to their car while they were asleep at their home.

A burnt out shell is all that is left of their Citroen Picasso, leaving them without a car and in disbelief as to why it was torched.

At first, it was not known whether the Devon fire on May 30 was deliberate or not but after viewing a neighbour's CCTV footage, Kevin Allum, 54, said that he was shocked to see two people had set it alight and then run off.

Kevin states that he discovered the fire after being awoken in his sleep by a 'big bang' and then when he looked out of their bedroom window, he could see their car engulfed in flames, Devon Live reports.

He rang the fire brigade who were already on their way after receiving calls from neighbours.

Kevin recalled: "We were in bed when I was woken by a bang. I thought it sounded like a gunshot. Although it woke me up I didn't get up and then I heard a proper big bang.

"I jumped out of bed and looked out of the window and saw our car on fire. One minute I was asleep and the next minute I was looking at carnage. It's a shell of the car it was."

After the fire bridge extinguished the fire it was not known at first what had caused it.

Kevin said: "Initially it was thought it could have been an electrical fire. Then one of the neighbour's rewound his CCTV and you could see two individuals wearing hoodies and tracksuits set fire to the back of the car and then leg it off.

"We have not got enemies and have not had any arguments so I don't know if it was just one of those random things? Our car is kept on a small private road.

"I don't know what this world has come to."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police are investigating a suspected arson to a car which was reported to have taken place on Princess Road in Kingskerswell.

"The incident is believed to have taken place at around 11pm on Monday, May 30. The cause of the fire is currently being treated as suspicious and enquires are ongoing."

Anyone who witnessed the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting CR/046783/22.
