Couple heartbroken as only half of guests turn up to wedding and mum leaves early

A young couple was left heartbroken after more than half of their wedding guests didn't bother to turn up.

The non-binary newlyweds from Iowa, US, had originally invited more than 100 people but were devastated when they started walking down the aisle to a half empty venue.

Gray Narvaez-Dragion, 18, wore a traditional white dress when they married partner Nyx, also 18, on their third anniversary.

Adding to the injury, Gray's mum had to leave early for work.

Ahead of their big day, 88 people had RSVPed saying they were excited to attend, but not even 40 guests arrived to celebrate with the couple.

Gray said their heart sank when they walked down the aisle and saw the venue was half empty and that in the run-up to the wedding, people said they were looking forward to it.

He said: "During the wedding, most had noticed the lacklustre attendance and even apologised, specifically the ex-coworkers that did go, they had no answer as to why some didn't show."

Gray, who works at a food shop, said that almost none of their co-workers showed up, including one guest who was organising the bridal bouquet.

She continued said: "My flowers were supposed to be cascading and weren't, they stood up straight. She texted me if I liked them, but honestly, what was I supposed to tell her an hour before my wedding?"

Nyx works in a fast food restaurant and their colleagues also never showed up.

Gray added: "Nyx's family left early, literally right after the ceremony.

"Then my mum left early for work."

After Gray's upsetting video went viral, the couple received a lot of love and support from strangers and have had no contact with anyone that let them down since the wedding.

Gray said: "I only had one person contact me and give me a reason, the rest just didn't show."

The couple had paid for cupcakes, a three-tiered cheesecake and food to feed 90.

He said: "I'd say we lost $2,500 out of the $3,000 spent.

Gray's father counted 38 people at the ceremony.

She continued: "By the time Nyx and I made our entrance to the reception about 28 were there.

"88 people total said yes. Everyone was very aware it was on a Monday and had no issue with it.

Gray had the invites custom made and the date, time and location details were all correct.

Sadly the couple's reception fizzled out.

Gray said: "The reception was almost scrapped and we cancelled our sparkler send-off."

They added: "Our opinion on everyone has changed.

"Everyone that did show up remains close to us, we are so thankful for them.

"We were both equally devastated considering the people invited all meant a lot to us.

"The people that didn't show just aren't worth our time. Simple as that."
