Couple allegedly coughed on at Port Stephens, police investigating

Police are investigating an alleged coughing incident at Port Stephens on Sunday, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A 73-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were walking along Victoria Parade at Nelson Bay about 2pm when a white Nissan Navara pulled up beside them as they approached a pedestrian crossing.

Police have been told a man leaned his head and shoulders out the passenger-side window of the vehicle and allegedly coughed and made a retching sound at the couple.

He and the other occupants of the vehicle started laughing before they drove away, police say.

Investigators would like to speak with a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries - described as being of Caucasian appearance with tanned skin, aged in his late teens or early 20s, with short, dark, curly hair.

He was last seen wearing a red and dark coloured chequered top.

Police are urging anyone with information, including dash cam footage from the area around the time of the incident, to contact Nelson Bay police as soon as possible.
