Councillor apologies for using language over Brexit which was branded 'shocking'

A district councillor has said he apologises if anyone was offended by a Facebook post in which he called some MPs "treacherous bastards".

Newark Labour had criticised the deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Keith Girling, for what they described as 'shocking' language in his Brexit comments.

Councillor Girling had taken to Facebook to share his frustration over Brexit.

In a post on his public page on October 19 about the actions of Parliament, he wrote: "Out means out now not just for BREXIT but for those treacherous bastards that have egnored [sic] the will of the people."

After seeing the post Newark Labour branded his language as shocking.

A spokeswoman for the  group said: "Such language using the concept of ‘treachery’ and the message it conveys has been shown to incite abuse, intimidation, death threats and actual violence against MPs of all parties.

"It has been condemned by parliament and by all parties. We know that attacks using the language of ‘treachery’ formed the context of the murder of Jo Cox, MP.

"To see the deputy leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council who is also a Notts County Councillor publicly using such language is truly shocking. It should be condemned by both councils and appropriate action taken."

Mr Girling later said: "Just been thinking about my post with regards to my opinion of how Parliament is doing in delivering the will of the people.

"Those who know me know I am passionate about democracy and what I do in all aspects of my life and on reflection my choice of language to express my frustration and the frustrations of so many others over Brexit may have been a bit strong, so if any offence was caused, I apologise.

"However, it's very clear that 'Liarbour' is doing all they can to stop BREXIT even though the public doesn’t want any more delays."
