Council to introduce kerbside recycling bins

Mount Isa is set to get recycling bins for the first time.

Mount Isa residents in Queensland's north west can expect to start seeing yellow lid bins in the town in the next three months.

The local council has been successful in obtaining State Government funding to assist with the cost of transporting recyclables to Townsville for processing.

Mount Isa City Council waste management team leader Sam Wylie said the funding was vital to getting the project off the ground.

"It hasn't been viable in the past ... because of the prohibitive distances to transport waste material," Mr Wylie said.

"Mount Isa City Council has put together a project … to use this funding as a data-capture process to actually determine and narrow down public interest, participation, and rough tonnages."

Mr Wylie said a trial would begin in the town in the next 10 weeks, with about 300 bins to be distributed to interested locals.

As for what can go in the bins, Mr Wylie said it would be similar to that for coastal towns.

"It will be marginally different and slightly more limited," he said.

"For example, empty aerosol cans and things like that won't be acceptable but the materials that are open for this trial are paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans, plastics with the recycle triangle on them as well as glass bottles and jars."

Mr Wylie said with the funding for the program coming from the Queensland Government, the program would not be a cause for a local rates rise.

The Mount Isa City Council currently has a survey out where local residents can express their interest in taking part of the trial.

"The container exchange program has shown to a huge degree that Mount Isa people are interested in recycling," Mr Wylie said.
