Council house tenant raises concerns over damp in flat

A Paisley mum believes housing chiefs have been slow to react to a damp problem in her flat.

Council tenant, Kerrie Woods, discovered the damp patch in her Well Street flat after trying to fix a broken floorboard underneath her carpet.

The mum-of-two reported the problem to Renfrewshire Council at the start of the month but believes the local authority has dragged its heels over getting repairs made.

However, Renfrewshire Council bosses say that have already visited the property for an inspection and will head back out for a second visit tomorrow, before carrying out any work required.

Mrs Woods, 24, said: “We found the mould in our bedroom after the floorboard broke, when we noticed it I reported it straight away but the person I spoke to on the phone didn't seem interested, which really shocked me.

“It is on the floor and now spreading to the skid boards, and the bathroom is just as bad as well.

"When I told them about the bathroom problem they told me to limit the amount of time I spend in there.

"That is hard when you have two children who are one and three years old.

“I am asthmatic and haven't used my inhaler for six or seven years, but now I am using it again because of the condition of the floors.”

The Paisley Express previously reported that more than 850 council houses in the Renfrewshire had been flagged up as having dampness and mould issues.

The same Freedom of Information investigation revealed that 1,293 documents within the council contained the words “damp” or “mould” within them in relation to council housing reports.

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Our tenants’ health and wellbeing is very important to us. The property was inspected on August 16 and repairs actioned.

“A further inspection was requested and is scheduled for August 30.

"We will take whatever steps are necessary to address the repair issues that may be contributing to dampness in the property.”
