Council chips in to help drive home safety message for region's youth

THERE'S little more than $13,000 left in the kitty as young drivers and a local scout group clean up with donations from Lake Macquarie City Council.

The council will give $2000 to both the RYDA program, which makes driver education accessible for students from different socioeconomic backgrounds - and the Byattunga Scout Group for a new dining shelter.

Road Safety Education, which runs the RYDA program, is a not-for-profit that aims to increase understanding of road safety issues and risks, educate students about their rights and responsibilities on the road and give them the tools to drive safely.

The organisation trains volunteers and crash survivors to run one-day workshops along with police officers, driving instructors and psychologists.

The $2000 boost from the council will help deliver the program to about 500 local students from 2021 to 2023.

It costs about $48 to put a student through the program, and it's hoped the donation will make it more accessible to less affluent students.

The Byattunga Scout Group was also given $2000 for a new dining shelter used at local, regional, state and national camps.

The group is based in Morisset and has around 60 young members and 20 adult volunteers.

The current shelter is more than 15 years old and funds for the project will allow its other fundraising efforts to be used to deliver more programs to young people in the region.
