Cosy Liverpool venue where you can people watch over a huge breakfast - review

At this time of year a hearty breakfast is just what you need to set you up for the day and there’s a south Liverpool restaurant serving huge portions in the cosiest of settings.

Sometimes you get foodie venues that are a little bit of everything and Three Piggies on Allerton Road is definitely one of them. You can pop in for a cocktail or beer with friends, enjoy a relaxed family meal, meet for a date or just call in for coffee and cake.

In the summer, there’s seating outside where you can dine al fresco amongst the hustle and bustle of Allerton Road. But I’ve always enjoyed visiting in the colder months, when the log burner fire is roaring away and you can get cosy whilst people-watching from the huge windows.

Inside it feels warm, bright and inviting, with lots of fresh green hanging baskets, plump booths and long bench-style tables, with plenty of room to spread out wherever you’re sat. On a recent Sunday morning, my family and I paid a visit for breakfast and I was pleased to get a seat right by that cosy fire.

My husband and I each ordered a Piggies Breakfast (£11), which came with (almost) everything you’d expect in a Full English. We ordered a Teapigs Tea (£3) and a Flat White (£3.20), which arrived within minutes along with the kid’s orange juices (£2 each). While it was great to get the drinks in good time, I prefer mine nice and hot with my breakfast, which took a good 20 minutes to arrive.

The portion size here is pretty hefty - you get two thick slices of ‘proper’ bacon, which were deliciously salty, two meaty sausages, which were nice and peppery and thankfully not full of questionable gristle. The black pudding added to the feast and there were two eggs (I opted for poached, but wish I’d gone for scrambled after seeing my husband’s cooked to perfection).

A mountain of mushrooms, which were a bit on the soggy side and a pot of beans, which I quickly deposited, filled the plate even further. The beans, which had a smokey spice to them, were actually one of my favourite parts of the breakfast.

There was also half a tomato, which added a bit of fresh colour but I wasn’t particularly keen on the thick white bread, which really lacked any kind of flavour. I was also desperately missing my breakfast hero - there was no hash brown in sight, even to add on as an extra. Sigh.

But, with a name like ‘Three Piggies’ it would only be right for the pork to be the star of the show, and that was certainly the case with this breakfast. I feel like I can still taste the bacon now, it’s the kind of stuff that just leaves your mouth watering for more.

The kids were more than happy with their mini versions (which were actually still quite large, I thought) with one bacon, one sausage, one egg, beans and two toast (£7). Somehow, we all still had room to try the pancakes (rude not to and all that) and wow, we were glad we did.

We split one portion (£8) between us and with three huge golden pancakes on the plate, smothered in Nutella, whipped cream and strawberries, there was plenty for the four of us to share. The pancakes were heavenly - fluffy on the inside, crisp round the edges - and you don’t need me to tell you how delicious Nutella is.

But what I will say is they don’t give you a tiny amount of toppings here - the pancakes were absolutely covered, so thankfully there were no arguments between my kids over who got the most. If you go to Three Piggies for the pancakes alone, it won’t be a wasted journey. Three Piggies is 77-79 Allerton Rd, Liverpool L18 2DA and you can visit the website here.
