Costumes banned at some screenings of 'Joker'

If you're going to see "Joker" on the big screen, you might want to think twice about dressing up like the iconic Batman supervillain.

According to TMZ, the Landmark Theatres chain is banning costumes and masks for screenings of the movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as the title character.

Landmark CEO Ted Mundorff told TMZ: "We are not allowing costumes, face painting or masks by either our employees or guests."

Landmark operates over 50 theaters in 27 markets in the U.S.

In the name of safety and security, several other big theater chains had already enacted policies that prohibit moviegoers from donning masks and face paint or bringing props.

This all comes amid backlash against "Joker," with some saying the film contains a dangerous message and could potentially incite troubled individuals to commit mass shootings. Critics have described the film as "grim, gritty, harsh, and disturbing."

Family members of some of the victims of the 2012 Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" have penned a letter to Warner Bros. voicing their concerns.

"We are calling on you to be a part of the growing chorus of corporate leaders who understand that they have a social responsibility to keep us all safe," the letter reads, according to a copy obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. The families have called on Warner Bros. to donate to nonprofits that help the victims of gun violence.

The Century Aurora and XD _ the remodeled venue where 12 people were killed and 70 others injured _ will not be showing "Joker."

Warner Bros. has responded by saying it is already takings steps to address the epidemic of gun violence, but insisting "Joker" is not an endorsement of violence or meant to portray the character as a hero.
