Cost of a parking ticket in Scotland could rise to £120

The maximum amount a driver can be charged for breaking parking rules could increase to £120 if industry chiefs get their way.

The British Parking Association (BPA) - known as BPA Parking Scotland - says parking companies should be able to charge a driver £120 - instead of the current maximum £100.

But the UK Government wants to set the limit at £50, reports The Mail.

The BPA says if fines are cut to £50 - which would be reduced to £25 for early payment - some drivers would opt to pay the fine instead of pay for parking.

BPA chief Andrew Pester told the Mail: "We are calling on the Government to reconsider its proposal to reduce the level of parking charge and to further engage with landowners and parking operators to ensure a sufficient deterrent, which is effective and improves compliance with parking rules."

The UK Government are working on a new code for private parking firms.

The number of private parking firms issuing tickets to drivers has increased by nearly two-thirds in just five years, new figures show.
