Cost behind decision to decommission royal train

  • King Charles has approved the decommissioning of the royal train, with its operations set to cease in early 2027.
  • The decision was made due to the high costs of storing and maintaining the train relative to its usage, the significant investment needed for its upkeep, and the availability of two new helicopters as reliable alternatives for royal travel.
  • James Chalmers, Keeper of the Privy Purse, stated that the move demonstrates the royal household's commitment to "fiscal discipline" and providing "value for money."
  • King Charles, who has fond memories of the train, and the Prince of Wales both support the decommissioning decision.
  • Before its final removal from service, there is hope for the train to make further visits across the UK, and discussions are underway to find a long-term public display home for some of its historic elements.
