Corrie receives Ofcom complaints over kidnap storyline

Coronation Street has received complaints over its storyline about the kidnap of baby Aled Winter-Brown.

Viewers were left shocked last week when Freda Burgess, who is deaf, took Gemma Winter and Chesney Brown's son before he was due to have surgery to have a cochlear implant.

An upset Freda took Aled after overhearing Gemma's mum Bernie and Chesney discussing the hassle of attending deaf groups and saying how they wanted Aled to fit in once he'd had his operation.

Freda barricaded herself into the community centre with Aled as a panicked Gemma brought in an interpreter to get through to Freda.

But she refused to hand Aled over, explaining that she didn't want him to lose his identity.

Eventually police arrived and the couple got their baby back, but Aled missed his operation.

One viewer said on Twitter about the storyline: "Freda had no right to keep Aled like that and it's certainly nothing to do with her whatever Chesney and Gemma decide.

"Really uncomfortable as a viewer to watch that episode not the greatest message to send out @itvcorrie."

"What right has Freda got to ambush Aled?!?" asked another.

"Freda has given the deaf community a bad name with this storyline," complained another.

"Chesney and Gemma are Aled's parents, so they're the ones who make decisions in Aled's best interests. Freda needs to back off and keep her nose out!"

TV watchdog Ofcom has received 62 complaints from Corrie viewers over last Wednesday' scenes.

These complaints do not mean the show has broken guidelines, and Ofcom will decide in due course if it will investigate.

The watchdog states that the number of complaints received is not an indication of how serious an issue is and 'all complaints are assessed against the Broadcasting Code.'

Last month Ofcom received more than 200 complaints about scenes featuring Evelyn Plummer played by Maureen Lipman.

Viewers of the ITV soap complained when Tyrone Dobbs' grandmother gave an opinion on 'play therapy' as she tried to help Tyrone and Fiz Stape deal with their arsonist daughter Hope.

Evelyn pointed out that Hope needed 'professional help' during an episode aired on Monday, August 16.

"She’s had play therapy, touchy, feely rubbish, new age, but she needs something long-term," Evelyn said in the scene.

"Teach her right from wrong."
