Coronavirus Ireland update as five more deaths announced and 19 new cases confirmed

A further five people have sadly died due to Covid-19 it has been announced this evening while a further 19 cases have been confirmed.

The latest figures were released by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

In Northern Ireland there were no deaths reported today for the fourth day in a row.

The death toll in the north has remained at 537 for the last 96 hours.

It was also confirmed that a further 13 people in Northern Ireland have tested positive for Covid-19.

The total number of confirmed cases there has now risen to 4,818.

The latest figures come as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed that he wants the country to be "almost fully open" by the middle of next month.

Hairdressers and beauty salons could open sooner than the current planned date of July 20.

However Mr Varadkar warned that there is always a risk that the virus could "make a comeback", which would delay any reopening.

He told RTE 2fm's Breakfast Show that plans will be discussed this week to fast-forward phases four and five of the Government's roadmap.

The Fine Gael leader said that the original plans to enter phase 5 in August were "too slow".

Meanwhile delighted shoppers queued up to enter iconic Arnotts and Brown Thomas in Dublin on Wednesday after the iconic department stores opened their doors.

The stores fully re-opened to the public following the Government’s announcement of a move to “Phase Two Plus” on Friday.
