The Government is under increasing pressure to provide NHS staff with vital personal protective equipment (PPE), as supplies dwindle at the height of the coronavirus crisis.
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick told today's Downing Street press conference that some 84 tonnes of PPE are due to arrive in the UK on Sunday to help plug the gaps, after he announced £1.6 billion of fresh funding for councils to help tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
It comes after the death toll among coronavirus patients in UK hospitals passed 15,000, with 888 further fatalities confirmed over night.
Doctors and nurses working in the NHS are continuing to voice concerns over access to gowns and other crucial items amid the outbreak. The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) said it was “deeply disturbed” that medics could be asked to reuse or wear sub-standard kit when treating virus patients.
