Coronavirus UK death toll rises to 233 as 5,018 test positive for the deadly bug

The UK coronavirus death toll has increased to 233 after 53 more people died in just 24 hours.

5,018 people have now contracted the virus in the UK - a rise of 1,035 in a day.

The victims are aged between 41 and 94 years old and all had underlying health conditions.

NHS England said in a statement: "A further 53 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19), have died - bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in England to 220.

"Patients were aged between 41 and 94 years old and all had underlying health conditions."

It comes as a seventh person has died in Scotland after contracting coronavirus, with positive cases rising to 373.

The breakdown is as follows: Ayrshire and Arran, 21, Borders, 10, Dumfries and Galloway, 13, Fife, 13, Forth Valley, 27, Grampian, 20, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 110, Highland, 8, Lanarkshire, 49, Lothian, 44, Shetland, 24 and Tayside 34.

The Scottish Government confirmed the news in its latest update this afternoon. 

Meanwhile Scots  police  chiefs have warned pubs they face being ‘dealt with appropriately’ if they continue to stay open after they were told to shut amid the  coronavirus  crisis.

Boris Johnson  announced that clubs, restaurants and pubs should close by Friday evening as the Government laid down strict new legislation to deal with the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the UK.
