Coronavirus: See 'eerie' Newcastle City Centre on the first full weekend with nobody out

These surreal pictures show Newcastle City Centre during the first Saturday night in coronavirus lockdown.

Recently listed as one of the best party cities on Earth, Newcastle resembled a ghost town at the weekend as pubs, bars and restaurants were all shut for the first weekend in living memory.

The city's infamous Bigg Market was eerily quiet while Collingwood Street, home to the 'Diamond Strip' made famous by Geordie Shore, was deserted.

Stack, in Pilgrim Street, was locked up and while the crowds of revellers usually found mingling outside The Gate were missing.

And the Quayside was completely desolate, with the message to the public to stay at home seemingly getting through.

The pictures were taken by photographer Max Cooper during his daily exercise.

"It was eerie, silent, surreal but also very clean and made me admire the architecture," said Max.

The weekend gone was the first in full lockdown, after PM Boris Johnson announced drinking establishments would have to close following last orders on Friday March 20.

They were brought in to try and halt the spread of Covid-19, which to date, has claimed over 1,000 British lives and infected over 300,000 people globally.

The Government announced on Sunday that "normal life" may not resume in Britain for several months.
