Coronavirus Scotland: No deaths from virus for 16 days as 18 new cases confirmed

No further deaths from coronavirus have been recorded in Scotland for the 16th day in a row.

The latest Scottish Government data showed that 18 new cases of the virus were recorded in the previous 24 hours, taking the total number identified in the country to 18,645.

No new deaths means the total number of people who have died after testing positive remains at 2,491.

260 people are in hospitals across Scotland with either confirmed or suspected coronavirus - with three patients in intensive care.

The 18 new cases represented just 0.5% of those tested, the Scottish Government said.

In total, some 73,568 tests were carried out in Scotland in the previous seven days, the data shows. Well over 350,000 tests have been conducted by NHS labs since the start of the pandemic in March.

66 care homes in Scotland recorded a case of confirmed or suspected coronavirus in the previous seven days.

It comes as a spike in infections in the North West of England prompted the Scottish Government to ask Scots to avoid travelling to the area.

One of Scotland's most senior police officers said that whilst Police Scotland have no enforcement powers, he hopes Scots would choose to "do the right thing" and stay away.

Those who do return from any of the areas with a spike are asked to limit social contacts outside of their household for 14 days.

Nicola Sturgeon has said there is a "significant risk" of the virus being imported into Scotland from those areas of the UK with a higher prevalence of the virus.
