Coronavirus Scotland latest: alarm as positive cases surge by 67 overnight

Scotland has seen 67 new cases of coronavirus recorded in the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement today at the coronavirus daily briefing, after Aberdeen was put on a local yesterday due to an outbreak in the city and surrounding area.

The 67 positive cases confirmed yesterday represents 1.2% of people who were newly tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in Scotland to 18,847.

Thirty nine of the 67 cases were recorded in Grampian - although it is not clear how many are connected to the localised outbreak in Aberdeen.

Nicola Sturgeon also advised that 17 of the new cases are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde area and that experts are now looking for patterns in these new reports.

270 patients are currently in hospital across Scotland, three more than yesterday.

Nicola Sturgeon says she believes the R number in Scotland is sitting between 0.6 and 1, which is a slight increase from previous estimates of between 0.6 and 0.9.

The First Minister added: "However, the R number because a less reliable indicator when the prevalence is as low overall as it currently is in Scotland.

"Modelling also shows that the number of people with the virus in Scotland continues to fall. These figures show the sustained and substantial progress we have made."

The First Minister also issued a warning against complacency: "We have seen in recent days an increase in positive cases.

"The new cases are linked to outbreak in areas - but not all cases are. We must be on our guard and recognise what these numbers are telling us - the virus is still very much out there.

"This is a reminder of just how easily this virus spreads if given the opportunity."
