Coronavirus safety concerns at The Range warehouse

The father of a worker at The Range distribution warehouse says he fears for his son's safety, after a staff member reportedly tested positive for coronavirus.

BristolLive reported on concerns last month about social distancing at the Avonmouth warehouse, after several colleagues raised concerns about the shift changeover.

Now the father of another worker has been in touch, claiming that a staff member who works there has contracted coronavirus and is now self-isolating.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: "They're all panicking. My son doesn't feel like he wants to be there - but people need to earn a wage.

"I'm concerned for my son's safety."

The alleged case comes after the tragic death of one of the managers at the warehouse, who had also been diagnosed with the virus.

Father-of-two Raza Ghulam was described by his partner as a "family man" who had a "heart of gold and a cheeky smile".

The Range has not confirmed if there have been any other cases of coronavirus at the distribution centre.

'Staff safety is paramount'

A spokesperson for DHL Supply Chain, which operates the site, said: "The safety of our employees and customers is paramount.

"While we are prevented from discussing individual cases of coronavirus across any of our operations, since the start of the outbreak all of our sites have been following the government’s strict guidelines around social distancing, with clear enforcement by local management teams.

"For several weeks, all high risk team members have been instructed to self-isolate, as have colleagues presenting any Covid-related symptoms.

"We will continue to reinforce the new government guidance at every opportunity to ensure the wellbeing of all our colleagues.”

New government guidance was released this week to ensure workplaces are 'Covid secure', and this includes a section specifically for factories and warehouses.

The Prime Minister said that anyone who feels they are working in unsafe conditions should discuss this with their employer and report it if they still have concerns.

The Health and Safety Executive is the government agency that is responsible for enforcement of workplace health and safety.
