Coronavirus: Point-to-points in Ireland and greyhound racing latest sports cancelled

Irish point-to-points and British greyhound racing are the latest sports to be called off during the coronavirus outbreak.

Governing bodies decided to stop meetings as the number of virus cases continues to grow.

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board made its announcement on Twitter, which said: "Due to the ever evolving situation, upcoming point-to-point fixtures have been cancelled until further notice.

"Regular updates will be issued once we have further information.

"Point-to-points will recommence when it is deemed appropriate to do so."

Irish point-to-points were continuing behind closed doors, with a daily meeting under Rules, adhering to the strict protocols.

In Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson banned all non-essential travel and gatherings of more than two people from Monday evening, to try and limit the spread of Covid-19.

Greyhound racing moved behind closed doors on March 21 but the decision was made to cancel cards at tracks including Poole, Henlow, Crayford and Monmore.

Greyhound Board of Great Britain managing director Mark Bird is seeking clarity regarding whether work is considered a 'gathering.'

"The GBGB has planned for this eventuality and we are ready to meet it head on," he said.

The sport joins a long list of abandonments in the UK, which includes the British Horseracing Authority suspending meetings.

They are not due to resume until May at the earliest, which brought the National Hunt season to an abrupt halt.
