Coronavirus morgue to open in industrial warehouse with capacity for 1,700 bodies

A warehouse on an industrial estate will be used as a morgue for coronavirus victims.

Glasgow City Council is currently working to convert the site, which it hopes will be open by Monday, April 20.

The facility at Hillington Industrial Estate will have the capacity to store 1,700 bodies.

As the death toll from Covid-19 rises, it is hoped that the temporary morgue will help to ease pressure on funeral directors.

The total number of people who have lost their lives to the virus in Scotland now stands at 615, after 40 more deaths were announced yesterday.

The warehouse is being leased by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC).

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "Like all local authorities across the UK, Glasgow, alongside key partners including the NHSGGC, is looking at various options for dealing with increased deaths as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.

"We are monitoring on a daily basis the impact of Covid-19 against our planning models for the pandemic including potential requirements for a temporary body storage facility.

"As part of this planning, a site has been identified and we are working towards making this facility ready for use should it be needed."

Temporary mortuaries have also been built elsewhere in Scotland for use if needed during the pandemic.

A facility has been built at Edinburgh's Mortonhall crematorium with another at Macmerry Industrial Estate, Tranent, East Lothian.

It comes as the UK's official death toll from Covid-19 increased by at least 813 in the last 24 hours.

It takes the total number of lives lost to 12,157 - although that includes only hospital deaths, and the toll is feared to be far higher when fatalities in care homes are taken into account.

Harrowing pictures emerged over the weekend of a makeshift morgue which has been built for coronavirus victims in London.

Located at the new 4,000-bed NHS Nightingale Hospital, the images show refrigerated container units with row upon row of shelves.

The temporary facility has been described as "the most bleak place in Britain".
