Beautiful Italian islands including Ischia, Procida and Capri could be safe destinations to visit this summer.

Residents are being urged to get vaccinated a soon as possible in order to welcome foreign visitors.

Picturesque locations such as the Aeolian archipelago north of Sicily and Elba off the coast of Tuscany are also hoping to sign up for the campaign.

The island vaccination plan has the support of Bernabo Bocca, the president of Federalberghi, a national association of hoteliers.

The mayor of Capri, Marion Lembo, is also hoping that this could enable a “Covid-free island this summer”.

“We hope to be a Covid-free island this summer,” she said.

“We can save the summer season while at the same time protecting the local population.”

There is no nationwide plan to inoculate Italy’s islands, but the initiative is being taken on by regions such as Campania, which includes Capri, Procida and Ischia.

Campania has set aside 20,000 vaccines for the islands, with the push due to start next week.
