Coronavirus Ireland update: Death toll rises by 8 as 295 new cases confirmed in Republic

Eight more people have died from the coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland.

And 295 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 have also been announced by the Department of Health.

There have now been 54 deaths related to the virus in the Republic. There have now been 2,910 people here who have tested positive for the bug.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “We are beginning to see encouraging signs in our efforts to flatten the curve.

"However, we cannot become complacent as we are still seeing new cases and more ICU admissions every day.

“Our strategy remains the implementation of public health restrictions to interrupt the spread of the virus and prevent people from arriving to ICU in first place.”

Six of the new reported deaths were in the east, one was in the south while one was in the west.

Five of these were female and three were male. The median age of the new deaths is 86.

Six of those who died had underlying health conditions.

Earlier on Monday, it was announced another person in Northern Ireland died from the virus bringing the North's death toll to 22.

The NI Public Health Agency's latest statistics, accurate as of Monday morning, also show that an additional 123 have tested positive for the contagious disease since.

This brings the total number confirmed to have the disease in Northern Ireland to 533.

It comes as more than a quarter of a million people have received the Covid-19 emergency unemployment payment - but thousands have also had their applications rejected.

Some payments were withheld for various reasons, with approximately 15,000 not meeting eligibility criteria - ie, if they were not previously in employment, under 18 years of age or were still in employment.

The Department of Social Protection said by close of business on Friday, payments were issued to 283,000 people.

It said these payments are in addition to the 201,000 people in receipt of standard jobseeker payments as of Friday - an increase of 19,000 on the figure at the end of February.

Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty told RTE radio the 350 euro per week payment will provide much-needed immediate assistance to workers who have lost their jobs.
