Coronavirus Ireland: The three key indicators that show Ireland's lockdown and vaccine rollout is working

With Ireland set to re-open gradually starting on Monday, April 12, there will be relief for the thousands of people who have been calling for an end to lockdown.

Up until this point, the Government was taking a cautious approach in order to try and continue the decline in the number of daily cases.

However, the public mood has begun to turn on the leaders as indicated by a recent poll.

But has the lockdown and the rollout of vaccines in Ireland worked?

We took a look at some of the crucial stats from the HSE data to find out.

Here are three main factors which show that it has.

The overall Covid-19 incidence rate

At the peak of the third wave on January 17, Ireland's overall incidence rate stood at a horrific 1,492 cases per 100,000 people.

Just under three months from that date, it sits at 164.1 cases per 100,000 people.

That is the bottom line to show that this extended period of lockdown has worked in squashing the third wave.

It is also the reason that the Government has decided to reopen the country on a phased basis.

If things deteriorate to the level that we were at in January, there are questions over whether the hospitals could cope.

The drop in cases among frontline healthcare workers

Since the middle of February, there has been a 95% decrease in the number of outbreaks among hospital staff.

Front line healthcare workers were, along with residents of long term care facilities aged over 85, the first cohort to be vaccinated.

In the week that ended on March 21, only 24 cases were recorded among hospital staff.

Hospital numbers

Much like the incidence rate, the staggering drop in the number of people in hospital points to a positive reaction from the vaccine rollout and from people abiding to the rules of level five.

At the peak of the third wave, almost 2,000 people were awaiting treatment in an Irish hospital for Covid-19 - 1,982 cases on January 17 to be exact.

That has fallen considerably to 237 as of Sunday evening.
