Coronavirus has not slowed Victoria's bushfire recovery efforts, royal commission hears

The Bushfire Royal Commission has heard the clean up in Victoria will not be delayed due to lock down measures being re-introduced in Victoria this week.

Victoria is still on track to finish its bushfire clean-up by the end of August, despite border closures and Melbourne going back into stage three coronavirus lockdowns.

Lee Miezis, the head of Bushfire Recovery Victoria, told the bushfire royal commission on Friday that while operational changes had been made, the clean up would continue as planned.

"We have not slowed up at all as a result of COVID-19," Mr Miezis said.

"We know communities were concerned about contractors coming into their area and leaving at weekends so we've required contractors to stay in situ.

"We are well and truly on track."

He also told the commission that to date, 84 per cent of properties have been cleared.

Bushfire, COVID-19 recovery efforts combine

The inquiry has also heard that is has become difficult in Victoria to determine whether the economic issues have come from bushfires or COVID-19.

Mr Miezis was also questioned by commissioners about whether the recovery efforts for coronavirus and bushfires would merge.

He told them, in effect, they already had.

"In a practical sense, it's the same people working on the delivery of programs," Mr Miezis said.

"We're taking a practical view of how the supports are delivered.

"But we are conscious that the bushfires have had a particular impact on those communities and those impacts have been amplified.

"It is almost a double whammy with COVID-19."

The inquiry was delayed on Friday due to technical difficulties and will resume on Monday, with NSW government representatives to give evidence about recovery and funding arrangements.
